When Should I Change Tires?

Of all the aspects that allow your vehicle to run smoothly and safely, one of the most important is easily the tires, which allow you to seamlessly speed over not just dry roads, but also fall debris, winter snow, and year-long rain.

We put a lot of faith into our tires to get us where we need to be, and that’s why it’s important to make sure that your tires are in top-notch condition, monitoring both their pressure and tread.

However, there comes a time in every tire’s life when it is simply time to change it. But how do you know when to do it?

Fortunately, there are a few easy tips and guides that will make the decision easy. A simple way to check out the tread of a tire is with the penny trick, which can be conducted with a simple penny.

All you have to do is place a penny between two ribs of the tire, rotate it so that Lincoln’s head points downward into the tread, and see if the top of his head disappears. If Lincoln’s whole head is visible, it’s time to change the tire.

This test is based on the fact that the U.S. Department of Transportation suggests replacing tires when the tread reaches 2/32 inches – which would reveal Lincoln’s entire head. Although, some sources recommend changing tires at a tread height of 4/32 inches, which may be even more safe.

In general, it’s safe to keep a log of how old your tires are. Have a professional check them out at least once every five years, and if 10 years pass without a tire needing to be changed, consider getting a new one. Just to be safe.
