Design Features of the Jeep Willys Lineup
The Wrangler, Wrangler 4xe, and Gladiator models all follow the same rugged design: the iconic seven-slot vertical grille, circular headlights, removable doors, a removable top, and a fold-down windshield. A design that is heavily inspired by the original Willys-Overland Jeep. The design notes that distinguish the Willys models are unmistakable. The timeless grille of these models is painted Gloss Black for a bold appearance. Both sides of the hood on all Willys models wear a decal that states the trim level’s name in bold, military-style lettering. The 4-Wheel Drive decal on the Wrangler’s rear swing gate and the Gladiator’s tailgate is also exclusive to the Willys trim. While the normal doors for these models are standard equipment, half doors are optional. By using zipper-closing plastic covers for the upper sections on the optional half doors, occupants can enjoy full open-air freedom while still having the security of a door. Other exterior features include LED headlights and fog lights, 17-inch black aluminum wheels, cab rock rails, and more. Standard interior features for the Willys trim include but are not limited to a 7-inch Uconnect 4 infotainment touchscreen, nine speakers, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, all-weather floor mats, and more.
Off-Road Capability of the Jeep Willys Models
The Jeep Willys lineup is meticulously crafted to capture the ruggedness of the original 4x4s on the battlefields of World War II. Like all other Gladiator and Wrangler models, the Willys trims come with Command-Trac part-time 4×4 with 2WD, 4WD-High, and 4WD-Low. Additionally, the Willys trims add a limited-slip rear differential to increase traction by optimizing the power sent to the rear wheels. This traction is enhanced even further by the knobby 32-inch mud-terrain tires wrapped around the black aluminum wheels. The Willys trims also borrow the cab rock rails and FOX shock absorbers from the mighty Rubicon trim.
History of the Willys Jeep
The history of the Willys trim and the Jeep brand dates back to 1940 when the U.S. Army requested a 1/4 ton “light reconnaissance vehicle” that met the Army’s specifications. Only Ford, Bantam, and Willys responded to the request. Over the next few months, the manufacturers collectively created the template for the vehicle that became known as “Jeep” worldwide. Willys delivered their prototype, named Quad, after its four-wheel-drive system, in November of 1940. After the Army modified its specifications, Willys went back to the drawing board and produced the Willys MA in 1941. In July of 1941, Willys was awarded the contract after putting the Willys MA through rigorous testing. The Willys Jeep MB was given to the Army in 1941 and quickly became an essential piece of equipment for soldiers on the World War II battlefields. Unbreakable bonds were formed between a soldier and his Willys “jeep” 4×4. The name ‘Willys’ and its battle-tested toughness lives on in the 2023 Willys lineup!
