Learn More from Warsaw Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram!
As Jeep continues to expand in the electric vehicle market, first with the Jeep 4xe models and now the all-electric Wagoneer S, it is important to understand how to charge an electric vehicle. The answer to that question depends on a few factors, including the size of the battery, the type of EV, and what your charging needs are. While the Jeep 4xe models are eligible for Level 1 and Level 2 chargers, the all-electric Wagoneer S can be charged by a Level 3 charger as well. To learn more about all three levels of EV charging for the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S, continue reading below!
What Charger Comes with the Purchase of a Jeep EV?
Level 1 chargers are the most basic EV charging method and come with the purchase of an EV. At one end of the Level 1 charging cable is an SAE 1772 connector that plugs into the Wagoneer S charging port on the driver’s side front quarter panel. On the other end is a simple three-prong plug that is fit for any household 120-volt outlet. With a Level 1 charger, it can take up to 72 hours to fully charge the Wagoneer S, making a Level 1 charger good for topping off the battery overnight or trickle charging it if you don’t plan on taking a trip for a couple of days. Charging times, however, depend on the battery’s current state of charge.
Level 2 EV Charger
Level 2 chargers are the more popular option among EV owners, as they provide more convenience with faster charging times. Whereas the Level 1 charging cable is plugged into a traditional household outlet, a Level 2 charger turns your home into an EV charging station with a professionally installed charging device. Jeep uses Free2Move Level 2 chargers installed by vetted Qmerit professionals for customers who choose to purchase a Level 2 charger. Level 2 chargers provide an alternating current for up to 10 to 19 kilowatts of electricity. This provides the Wagoneer S with a full charge in eight to ten hours, making it the better choice for an overnight charge when a full battery is needed for the next day. Level 2 chargers are also the ones you’ll find at a public EV charging station.
What is the Fastest EV Charging Method?
The last EV charging option for the Wagoneer S is Level 3, also known as Direct Current (DC) Fast Charging. As of now, Level 3 chargers are only available for battery-electric vehicles and not plug-in hybrids. Additionally, Level 3 chargers are only available at public charging stations and not available for at-home use. DC Fast Chargers use more than 400 volts of electricity to fully charge the Wagoneer S in 15-60 minutes, allowing you to stop for lunch and get a full charge in the same amount of time! The Free2Move smartphone app makes it easy to find the nearest Level 3 charging station. When you use the app, it also allows you to activate a charging session and pay for charging right from your smartphone.
What is Regenerative Braking?
Finally, the Wagoneer S is able to recharge its own battery while on the move through a process called regenerative braking. With regenerative braking, the driving range is increased by taking the kinetic energy created by braking, converting it into electricity, and sending it back to the battery pack by reversing the direction of the electric motors to be used again. Meanwhile, the Wagoneer S comes with a Max Regeneration feature, which remaps the gas pedal to improve the regenerative braking at low pedal positions. This allows drivers to slow down the vehicle without applying the brake pedal. However, you must use the brake pedal to bring the Wagoneer S to a complete stop. Max Regen stays on until the driver turns it off using the button found on the dashboard.
