The off-road capability of Jeep vehicles has been echoed around the world. Designs have changed over the years, and models have come and passed, but one thing has remained. That is the superior all-terrain capability that Jeep has built its brand image on. When the Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid was introduced in 2021, the brand’s commitment to the legacy of capability could’ve been brought into question. However, they quickly put any doubts to rest by not only saying but showing just how capable electric power can be! Now that the 4xe powertrain has been around for a few model years and joined the Grand Cherokee lineup, we’d like to offer you some information about just how capable the PHEV 4xe powertrain makes the Jeep lineup. Jeep 4xe Powertrain

Jeep’s new 4xe PHEV system brings together gas and electric power with a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a lithium-ion 400-volt battery pack, a transmission-mounted electric motor, and an engine-mounted electric motor. This gives both the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the electric motor within the transmission, this torque is instantly available without needing to wait for engine RPMs to build up. This is especially helpful while off-roading, as it provides the power necessary to move the wheels over a trail obstacle instantaneously. The Wrangler 4xe achieves a 49 MPGe rating, 21 miles of all-electric driving, and a 370-mile total driving range. Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee 4xe offers 470 miles of total driving, 25 miles of all-electric driving, and 56 MPGe.

Jeep 4xe 4×4 Systems

4xe conjoins the phrase four-by-four with the word electric, reading four-by-electric. Therefore, one can assume that all Jeep 4xe models come standard with 4×4, and that assumption would be correct. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes standard with the trusted Selec-Trac 4×4 system. Selec-Trac is an intelligent, full-time automatic 4×4 system. Instead of using driver input to shift between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, the Selec-Trac system does it automatically by sensing changes in road conditions and adapting itself accordingly. Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee 4xe comes with Quadra-Trac I 4×4, a full-time four-wheel drive system that splits the engine’s torque by 52% to the rear wheels and 48% to the front wheels, providing drivers with phenomenal traction at all times.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe and Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe

While the 4×4 systems offer phenomenal capabilities on the trails, Jeep takes it a step further by offering a trim level specifically designed for off-roading for both 4xe models. First, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe is the electrified variant of the legendary Rubicon trim that turned 20 years old in 2023. Replacing the Selec-Trac system, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe uses Rock-Trac 4×4, which offers enhanced traction while traversing rugged terrain. The Rock-Trac transfer case offers a low-range gear ratio of 4:1, meaning that when in 4-Low mode, the transfer case output shaft will turn one time for every four rotations of the transmission output shaft. The result of this is more torque at lower speeds to provide greater traction while off-roading. The Wrangler Rubicon 4xe also features an electronic sway bar disconnect, FOX suspension, locking differentials, all-terrain tires, and much more. Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe conquers all with Quadra-Trac II 4×4. This replaces the single-speed transfer case in Quadra-Trac I with a two-speed transfer case. By doing this, Jeep gives the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe greater traction thanks to the available 4-Low mode. Other standard features for the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe include but are not limited to all-terrain tires, Quadra-Lift air suspension with up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance, electronic sway bar disconnect, high-strength steel skid plates, and an anti-glare hood decal.
