Off-Road Capability of the 2022 Wagoneer
Presented by Warsaw Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram
In its early days, the Jeep Wagoneer was the pinnacle of luxury and capability. It combined air conditioning with leather seating, four-wheel drive with an automatic transmission, and more combinations that the industry hadn’t been seen before. After production of the Wagoneer halted in 1991, it is finally returning as a premium extension of the Jeep brand. It will re-enter the automotive industry with the same level of luxury and capability as the original Wagoneer, just on a much more modern scale. Its capability is brought on by a powerful V8 engine, three available drivetrains, and four-corner air shocks. Keep reading below as we give you an in-depth look at exactly what makes the 2022 Wagoneer so capable!
What are the three available drivetrains?
As we mentioned above, three drivetrains are available for the 2022 Wagoneer, Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II with an Electronic Limited Slip Rear Differential. All three are full-time four-wheel-drive systems and employ multiple sensors to monitor wheelspin and sense when a loss of traction occurs. Quadra-Trac I employs a single-speed transfer case designed to automatically redistribute up to 100% of the engine’s available torque to the wheels with the most traction. Quadra-Trac II operates the same way but utilizes a two-speed transfer case with Active 4-Low drive mode. Lastly, Quadra-Drive II acts similarly to Quadra-Trac II but uses an Electronic Limited Slip Rear Differential to provide maximum capability on and off-road.
What is Quadra-Lift?
Quadra-Lift is a four-corner air suspension system that gives the Wagoneer more than 3.5 inches of lift span. This system was chosen to give the Wagoneer higher ground clearance when it is needed, lower ground clearance for better aerodynamics, and a smooth ride on a wide range of road surfaces. The Wagoneer’s Quadra-Lift system has five ride height settings and can be manually controlled by the driver or automatically controlled by the system. Normal Ride Height (NRH) provides a baseline of 8 inches of ground clearance. When the system shifts to Off-Road 1, the system raises one full inch to 9 inches of ground clearance. Off-Road 2 provides drivers with the maximum ride height of 10 inches. Aero Mode helps drivers achieve maximum gas mileage by lowering the suspension by 0.6 inches, providing better aerodynamics. Lastly, Park Mode lowers the Wagoneer’s height by 1.6 inches to 6.4 inches of ground clearance, allowing easy entrance and exit for all passengers.
What is Selec-Terrain?
Selec-Terrain is what Jeep calls its traction management system. Selec-Terrain comes standard with all 2022 Wagoneer models equipped with four-wheel drive. The Wagoneer’s Selec-Terrain dial is placed on the center console within easy reach of the driver. It comes with Auto, Sport, Snow, Rock, and Sand/Mud modes. Auto mode allows the four-wheel-drive systems to detect road conditions and adjust itself to provide optimal traction. Sport mode puts Quadra-Lift in Aero mode, putting the ride height at 7.4 inches and adjusts transmission shift points and throttle control to give drivers a fun on-road driving experience. Snow mode optimizes the four-wheel drive and traction control systems to provide optimal grip on snow-covered roads. Rock mode raises the air shocks to Off-Road 2 for 10 inches of ground clearance while the transfer case, differentials, throttle, and transmission work together seamlessly to provide excellent control while crawling on rugged terrain. Lastly, Sand/Mud mode utilizes Off-Road 1 and optimizes the traction control and four-wheel-drive systems to respond to wheelspin and automatically redistribute the torque, keeping all four wheels moving in the right direction.
