Your first service is recommended to take place at or near 8,000 miles. However, this depends on how you use your truck. For example, if you use your truck for strenuous activities like towing or off-roading, we recommend that you service your truck every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. Conversely, if you use your truck for everyday driving and light hauling, 8,000 miles is the perfect time to get an oil change. All Ram trucks have an Oil Change Indicator to tell drivers when it’s time for an oil change. This indicator uses information including oil quality, engine size, and driving conditions to determine when an oil change is due. At each service, whether it be 5,000 or 8,000 miles, it’s important to have an oil change, oil filter change, multi-point inspection, and tire rotation performed.

Between your first service and the 20,000-mile mark, your truck has probably had at least one oil change service. After 20,000 miles, there are a few additional components that technicians recommend checking on top of the routine oil change and tire rotation. First, the steering and suspension system should be checked for malfunctions or damage to the shocks, struts, tie rods, and other critical components. The braking system should also be checked. This includes making sure the brake fluid reservoir is full, the brake lines are free from cracks, the calipers are not seized, and the pads and rotors are not worn down. Lastly, the engine coolant should be tested and flushed if necessary.

Under normal conditions, the engine air filter should be due to be replaced at the 30,000-mile mark. But if you drive on dirt roads often or use your Ram for off-roading, the air filter will most likely already have been replaced. On top of the routine services and checks, the drivetrain should be inspected. We recommend having the axles checked for loose fluid, as this indicates that there is a leak. The gearboxes should also be inspected as well as the fluid inside them. The transmission, front and rear differentials, and transfer case fluid should be inspected every 30,000 miles and replaced when necessary. Like engine oil, these fluids can break down more quickly if the truck is used for heavy towing or off-roading.

If the spark plugs have not already been replaced, they should be inspected and replaced if necessary as well. One other important component should be checked at or before 100,000 miles. The crankcase holding the engine oil has a part called the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. It is in place to recycle waste gases into the air intake system instead of emitting them into the atmosphere. The valve instead mixes the gases with fuel to be burned, reducing CO2 emissions. At around 100,000 miles, this valve can begin to show signs of its age, so it should be inspected and replaced if it is needed.
